Gerald was born 24 June 1932 in Louisville, Kentucky. In 1947 "Jerry" enlisted in Battery B, 623rd Field Artillery Battalion of the Kentucky National Guard. In 1951, he served in the Korean War and later in 1968 in the Vietnam Campaign where he was awarded the Bronze Star. LTC Carroll was a "mustang" who was commissioned in 1961 as an Infantry Officer in the United States Army Reserve. He later transferred to the Intelligence Corp, graduated from the University of Maryland, and supported his Terps. He retired from the U.S. Army in August 1979 as a Lieutenant Colonel.
After working for General Electric for nine years, he and his lovely wife, Martha, moved to New Bern, North Carolina in August 1988. They both enjoyed golf, bridge and traveling. Martha went to be with God September 2004.
Jerry was an active member of the Baracca Sunday School Class, First Baptist Church of New Bern, North Carolina. He was an avid golfer and member of the River Bend Country Club and a past president of the River Bend Men's Golf Association.
Jerry is survived by his current wife - Carol, two daughters, Susan Gleaton (Vernon) of Woodbridge, VA, Pam Poggi (Tom) of San Francisco, CA; one son, Gerald A. Carroll (Heather) of Woodbridge, VA; a step-daughter, Wendy Strickland and a step-son, Kevin Strickland, both of New Bern; one brother Kenneth Carroll ( Hilda) of Campbellsville, KY; eight grandchildren, Jason Gleaton, Elizabeth Mathewson, Jessica Lamanti, Cassandra Lamanti, Nicholas Lamanti, Delaney Carroll, Keagan Carroll, Taryn Carroll, and six great-grandchildren, Jacob Gleaton, Hope Gleaton, Ty Mathewson, Ella Mathewson, Kaylee Greene, Aubree Greene, and one step-great-grandchild, Damon Rand.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm Saturday, June 14, 2014 at First Baptist Church. Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service. Interment will be held at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Salvation Army.
