He is preceded in death by his parents, Bill Brooks and Virginia Avery, and a brother, Leslie "Buddy" Avery.
Gary is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Faye Brooks, sons; Reggie Brooks (Ann) of Zebulon, NC, Bill Brooks of New Bern, NC, two grandchildren; Maggie Brooks of Lexington, KY, and Jackson Brooks, of Zebulon, NC.
Gary was an avid fisherman who loved to spend time outdoors and tinker around the house. His family will remember him as a wonderful husband, a great Dad, and a most loving grandfather. He was a compassionate man who would always put the needs of others before his own.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00am on Wednesday, March 24, 2021 at Greenleaf Memorial Park, under the Lakeside Chapel.
