Born on November 6, 1949 in Glen Burnie, MD, to Elwood Hughes Edwards, Sr. and Julia Wheeler, Elwood Jr. was the eldest of three sons. With a ruddy complexion and fiery red hair, he grew to be six feet tall by just twelve years old. After moving with the family to New Bern, he graduated from New Bern Senior High School in 1967. Ever intrigued by a challenge, and with an interest in both science and math, he learned how to use a slide rule, and could solve a rubik's cube while making it look simple, demonstrating the critical thinking and problem-solving skills that would serve him well throughout his career.
In his lifetime, Elwood experienced the joys and challenges of marriage twice, first to Betsy Fulcher, who gave him the joy of daughters Sallie and Heather, and later to Karen Adams, each union bringing its own stories and cherished memories.
He embarked on a remarkable career in television that spanned over 50 years, mastering roles behind the scenes: master control, camera operator, editing, graphics, and even directing the news. Known for being kind-hearted and having a dignified bearing, Elwood carried himself with a friendly grace that made everyone feel welcome, despite his six foot, seven inch height. His voice, widely recognized as the voice of America Online, will echo in the memories of us all, a comforting background in a rapidly changing digital landscape. After retiring for the third time, he thrived as a freelance editor and voice over artist.
Elwood leaves behind a loving family, including his daughters Sallie and Heather Edwards, granddaughter Abbie Edwards, and brother William "Bill" Edwards. He was preceded in death by his father, mother, and brother Wayne.
A memorial service is scheduled for Monday, November 11, 2024, at 1:00 PM, set amidst the natural beauty of Glenburnie Park in New Bern, NC, where friends, family, and admirers of his work can gather to celebrate his life. Elwood's legacy will continue to resonate through the many lives he touched with his voice and his vibrant spirit. Let us gather to remember a man whose voice will continue to linger in our hearts, whose smile made the world just a little bit brighter, and whose memory will forever be cherished, as we share stories, remember his laughter, and celebrate the indelible mark he has left on our hearts.
Cotten Funeral Home is honored to serve the family and friends of Elwood "El" Hughes Edwards Jr.
