He graduated in 1961 from the University of Maine in Orono where he was a member of the ROTC and Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity. He proudly served in the U.S. Army for 27 years. Ed served in Vietnam 1967-1968 and Thailand 1972-1973. After retirement, Ed and Carol enjoyed traveling the United States and Canada. One of their favorite spots to visit was Key West where they enjoyed bicycling and paddling with their military friends and family at Naval Air Station Key West. Ed and Carol traveled to all 50 states and camped in 49 of the 50 states. Not only was Ed a Boy Scout, but he was a Scout Master for many years. He served in the Coast Guard Auxiliary. As an active member of Bridgeton United Methodist Church, Ed enjoyed serving men's breakfast and the Breakfast Rotary Club. He was the Adult Program Coordinator for North Carolina Wesleyan at Craven Community College. Ed was a member of the Road Gang at Fairfield Harbor. His favorite hobbies were wood working, fishing, and genealogy.
Ed is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Carol Haggett; sons, Edward Haggett IV (Sharron), Douglas Haggett (Sharon), Dennis Haggett (Christine), and Chris Haggett (Melanie); grandchildren, Lt. Commander Michelle McGavran (Brian), Jennifer Fuller (Michael), Stephen Haggett (Dawnanna), Zachary Haggett, Kaitlin Haggett; and great grandchildren, Chayse Haggett, Sophia Gohn, Kellum McGavran, Ben Gohn, Tessa McGavran, Korbin Haggett, and Beckam McGavran.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Edward G. Haggett, Jr. and Marion E. Haggett; brother, Leroy Haggett; and sisters, Mary Anne Haggett and Patricia Haggett.
A Celebration of Colonel Edward G. Haggett III's Life will be held on Sunday, April 25, 2021 at 2:00 PM at Cotten Funeral Home. Reverend David Brosnan will be officiating.
In lieu of flowers the family asks for donations to be made to Craven County Hospice or Bridgeton United Methodist Church.
