Edith Polasek Hughes died on April 6, 2018, after a rewarding life of 93 years. Born and raised in Corpus Christi, Texas, Edith moved to New Bern with her husband in 1945 following World War II, where he was stationed at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point. She was a devoted member of St. Paul Catholic Church. During various times of her life, she enjoyed sewing, crossword puzzles, beach combing and going to yard sales. Edith also loved gardening and had a special affection for gardenias, which she carried on her wedding day. Perhaps her greatest legacy is her children and family.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Edmund Earl Hughes, Jr.; her son, Thomas Mark Hughes; her parents, Frances and Rudolph Polasek, and her 13 siblings.
She is survived by her six children, Edith Kathrine Hughes Bambach (William Bambach), Sharon Patricia Hughes Killian (Charles Killian), Edmund Earl Hughes, III (Claudia Parker Hughes), Dorothy Gail Hughes Hovis (David Hovis), Robert Alan Hughes, and David Glenn Hughes (Susan Cline Hughes); 13 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. April 10th at St. Paul Catholic Church, to be followed by a Funeral Mass at 2 p.m. Interment will be at New Bern Memorial Cemetery.
For those considering memorial contributions, the family suggests they be made to St. Paul Catholic School, 3007 Country Club Road, New Bern, NC 28562.
Arrangements are by Cotten Funeral Home & Crematory.
