Diane Hosey Howell was born on June 17, 1949 and died on December 2, 2014 after a prolonged battle with cancer. She was 65 years old and retired. Ms. Howell was the daughter of retired U.S. Navy Commander William B. Hosey and retired Emory University research assistant Anne D. Hosey, both deceased.
Diane Howell was a 1967 graduate of Druid Hills High School in Decatur, Georgia. She also graduated in 1992 from Charleston Southern University in Charleston, South Carolina with a BS degree in criminal justice, summa cum laude.
Ms. Howell worked as an advocate for children and family issues and support groups most of her working life. First, she worked as a volunteer on charitable children and family causes in conjunction with former Georgia Governor Jimmy Carter’s office. Then after graduating college, she worked as a victim’s advocate for the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office in Summerville, South Carolina. Ms. Howell then worked as a caseworker for child support with the Children and Family Support Divisions in both South Carolina and North Carolina. She also worked with the Senior Citizens Activities Centers in Cobb County, Georgia. She was a past president of the Junior Women’s Club of Georgia and was listed in the Who’s Who of Women in Georgia.
Diane Howell is survived by her former husband Douglas W. Mitchell, an attorney in Douglas, Georgia; her daughter Laura Mitchell Jones, a speech therapist, and spouse Robert along with granddaughters Georgia and Ashley of New Bern, North Carolina; her brother John L. Hosey and spouse Kay of Roswell, Georgia; her nieces Caroline Vickery and spouse Robert of Rock Hill, South Carolina and Priscilla Gunter and spouse Cale of Monroe, Georgia; and her nephews Jonathan Driggers, Benjamin Driggers and Tyler Vickery. She is also survived by her cousin, Fiona Duncan and uncle, Sir John Bruce Duncan of the city of Cairns, Queensland, Australia.
Memorial services will be held on Sunday, December 7, 2014 at 2:00 pm at Centenary Methodist Church in New Bern, NC. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the American Cancer Society.
