Cindi was born on October 26, 1962, in Raleigh to Faye and John Hoke, Sr., but early on called New Bern, NC home. Cindi was passionate in everything she tackled, from excelling in her schoolwork, where she was a Graduation Marshall, but loved nothing more than singing and playing music under Marilyn Johnson together at Centenary United Methodist Church and the New Bern High School Band and Chorus. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Nursing at East Carolina University. She began her career as a critical care nurse at Pitt Memorial Hospital. Later, she earned her master’s degree at Duke University and became a well-regarded clinical nurse specialist across North Carolina and Maryland. Never one to turn down a challenge, she then began her career in medical sales for the hospital bed company Hill-Rom earning many sales awards.
In the middle of a very successful business career, Cindi undertook her biggest challenge to raise and nurture her family. With her husband Scott, they raised and home-schooled two wonderful children.
She was a friend to all and a great host for neighborhood cookouts, parties and Thanksgiving dinners. She was a dedicated NC State Wolfpack fan attending most home football games. Her career and ability to host and sing were limited when chronic illness struck but her strength of spirit kept her being a great friend, mother and wife.
Cindi was preceded in death by her mother, Faye Boyd Proctor; her father, John Hoke, Sr; and her cherished, stepfather Mack Proctor; stepsister, Sherry Freeman; and mother-in-law, Mazie Bumgarner.
She leaves in God’s hands her husband, Scott; and children, Kathryn and Keith in Wake Forest. Also surviving are her brother, John Hoke and his wife Pam of Greenville, NC; and her stepsisters, Sue Harrell and husband Mike, and Katy Register and her husband Sam, all of New Bern. She is also survived by her father-in-law, Garland Bumgarner of Winston-Salem; brother, Brent Bumgarner and his wife Laura of Raleigh; and nephew Stuart Bumgarner of Orlando, FL, as well as many cousins all over the southeast.
The visitation will be at Cotten Funeral Home in New Bern from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Friday, July 15, 2022.
