Charles was born October 2, 1933 in New Bern, NC to Sam and Bertha Powell.
Charles married the love of his life, Addie Lee Jones, on January 8, 1955 after serving his country in the US Navy for three and a half years.
Music was his great joy, especially playing his tenor and bass trombones in several Salvation Army bands. For over 50 years he shared his joy of music with others as he taught children and adults alike to praise the Lord through music. This legacy continues as many of these individuals are now teaching others. He was bandmaster of The Salvation Army bands in Huntington, WV and New Bern, NC. He also had a beautiful voice and sang in various groups at church as well as singing solos.
He is survived by his wife, Addie Powell, children Freda Bullock (Bob), Major Teresa Hawley (Mike), Major Charles Powell (Paula) and Darlene Nanney; sisters Major Dorothy Sipe and Peggy Higgins; nine grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.
