Mr. Whitfield was born in Lowland, NC on May 27, 1928, to the late William James and Myrtle Creedle Whitfield, the seventh of eight children and the last surviving sibling. He graduated from Hobucken High School in 1947 and joined the United States Air Force and served for three years while stationed in Texas and Louisiana. Afterwards, he worked on a tugboat out of Norfolk, Va., until 1953 when he obtained a job with DuPont Co. in Grifton, NC. He worked in production and later the Research Lab for thirty-four years until his retirement in 1987. He was a member of Ruth’s Chapel FWB Church. He enjoyed studying and teaching God’s Word, reading theology, and discussing it. He also enjoyed gardening, fishing, shrimping, and woodworking.
Cecil was preceded in death by his daughter, Kathy Ann Whitfield. Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife of 61 years, Love Mercer Whitfield; sons, John M. Whitfield of New Bern, Stephen P. Whitfield (Joanna) of Goldsboro; daughters, Sherry W. Myers (Michael) and Susan W. Peck (Robert); grandsons, Jonathan M. Myers of Savannah, GA, Mark Whitfield, Joshua Whitfield, Stephen Whitfield and granddaughter, Elizabeth Whitfield.
Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, April 30, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at Cotten Funeral Home officiated by Rev. Dennis Wiggs. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
