Barry Robert Hertel

Barry Robert Hertel, 71, passed away on December 26, 2023. He was born in Niagara Falls, NY on September 12, 1952, to Edward and Jean (Galley) Hertel. He was married to Darcy Lynn (Moran) Hertel for 39 years.

He is survived by his two daughters, Tracie Sparks of New Bern, NC and Megan (Michael) McGraw of Melbourne, FL; two sisters, Karen (Steven) Ryder of Niagara Falls, NY and Janis Fey of Lockport, NY; his brother, Stephen (Carol) Hertel of Batavia, NY; his four grandchildren, Bryce and Trent Sparks and Dylan and Ethan McGraw; many nieces and nephews, and his beloved chihuahuas Scooter and Riley.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Darcy Lynn Hertel; his parents; two of his brother-in-laws, John Fey and Richard Green; and Teddy, one of his chihuahuas. He was a truck driver until his retirement, and enjoyed working at Lowe’s Food in Banner Elk, NC at the time of his death. He loved riding his Harley, working on his Hot Rod, wood carving, and enjoying a beverage with friends at one of his favorite watering holes. Barry never met a stranger, had a quirky sense of humor, and could find a joke in any situation.

There will be a visitation on Thursday, January 4 from 1-1:30pm at Cotten Funeral Home and a Graveside service from 2:00 pm - 2:30 pm at New Bern Memorial Cemetery. In addition to his funeral services, there will be a drop-in memorial Saturday, January 6, 2024 from 11:00 am - 12:00 pm at the Blind Elk Tap Room, 397 Shawneehaw Ave., Banner Elk, NC 28604.
