Robert A. Provencal, age 77, of New Bedford died Friday, August 8, 2014 at Sacred Heart Home after an extended battle with Alzheimer’s disease. He was the husband of the late Jeanne (Arguin) Provencal.
Born in New Bedford to the late Edward and Julie (Allain) Provencal, he was a lifelong resident of the city. Robert was a United States Army Veteran. He was employed for many years as a weaver at the former Gilt Edge Mill in New Bedford and then worked as a Security Guard at Stride Rite in New Bedford for several years.
He was a proud volunteer for the civil defense as a Sergeant with the New Bedford Auxiliary Police. He loved the outdoors and enjoyed camping at Forge Pond in Assonet, Knight 'n' Look in Rochester and Cranberryville in Carver, MA.
Survivors include 2 daughters: Elaine M. Lemieux and her husband Larry A. of New Bedford and Sandy A. Hopwood and her husband Barry of New Smyrna Beach, FL; a sister: Cecile Daigle of Oregon; 5 grandchildren: Jamie, Justin and Tyler Hopwood and Julie and Emily Lemieux; many nieces and nephews. He was also the brother of the late Ernest, Ronald, Henry, Edward, Andre and Joseph Provencal.
His Funeral will be held Tuesday, August 12, 2014 at 10:45 am from the ROCK FUNERAL HOME, 1285 Ashley Blvd, New Bedford with a Mass at 12:00 Noon in St. Bernard’s Church, 430 S. Main St, Assonet followed by burial with Military Honors in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Visiting hours will be held Monday from 4 to 7 pm.
