Robert Pitta passed away March 1, 2019 at St. Luke’s Hospital. He was the only son of Antonio and Mary (Costa) Pitta. Born September 13, 1941 he attended New Bedford High School. He was the husband of Marsha A. (Berube) Pitta until her passing on September 23, 1996. They shared 33 years of marriage.
Robert actively served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War from January 4, 1966 to January 3, 1968. He worked as a firefighter for the New Bedford Fire Department from 1970 until he retired in 1997.
After the loss of his wife and his retirement, Robert entered into a 20-year relationship with the late Muriel Guay. During their years Robert became a loving and caring companion to Muriel, and an integral member of the Guay family. Although it wasn’t always easy, Robert helped make his and Muriel’s last years shared together the best they could be. He is survived by Muriel’s family, including Michelle Pequita & friend Lydia, 2 godchildren and 3 cats.
Robert enjoyed caring for his cats, communicating on his ham radio, visiting Ned’s Point and the Cape Cod Canal. He also enjoyed photography and left the Guay family with a beautiful collection of family photos that will be cherished. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a local animal shelter of your choice.
His funeral service will be held on Friday, March 8, 2019 at 12pm at the ROCK Funeral Home, 1285 Ashley Blvd, New Bedford. Visitation will be held prior from 10am - 12pm. Burial to follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery. For tributes/directions: www.rock-funeralhome.com
