He was an avid softball player and played in leagues throughout New Bedford, and worked as a correction officer for 18 years at SECC in Bridgewater.
Michael channeled his love of sports into coaching youth sports, winning a championship with his Alves Chiropractic baseball team at Whaling City in New Bedford. He took several soccer teams to championships at AYSA in Acushnet. He coached basketball leagues in Acushnet schools bringing home 1st place trophies from many tournaments. While winning was usually the result, he strived to instill a love for the game and a sense of personal discipline and accomplishment in all his players.
He volunteered many years in the Acushnet school system as well as area senior organizations. He was a lifelong fan of the Dallas Cowboys and fan of the New York Yankees. He was an avid card player, loved music and a wonderful dancer. He will always be remembered for his quick wit and love of making people laugh.
But his pride and his joy was his 2 sons, his family and his dog, Wayne.
In addition to his loving mother Libania are his 2 sons, Matthew and Adam Ferreira of Acushnet, his sister Brenda Lobo of Fairhaven, his sister Linda Melo and husband Norberto of Wareham, his brother Victor Bala and wife Rhonda of Acushnet, his uncle John Ferreira and wife Sharon of Marion, his aunt Elaine DeOliveira of New Bedford, 5 nieces and nephews and many cousins.
His funeral will be held on Thursday, July 15, 2021 at 9:00am from the ROCK FUNERAL HOME, followed by his Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00am in St. Mary’s Church, 343 Tarkiln Hill Rd, New Bedford. Burial in Rural Cemetery. His visitation will be held on Wednesday, July 14, 2021 from 4:00pm-8:00pm in the ROCK FUNERAL HOME, 1285 Ashley Blvd., New Bedford, MA. 02745
