Born in Povoacao, Sao Miguel, Azores, a son of the late Antonio Moniz and Maria (Pacheco) Moniz, he came to the United States in 1970 and settled in New Bedford.
While in the Azores, he proudly served in the Portuguese Army working in the infirmary as a nurse. He was also a professional driver. He enjoyed his yearly trip back to the Azores.
Locally, Mr. Amaral worked as a cable splicer aboard fishing boats. He and his wife often took drives by the waterfront to admire the fishing fleet.
Manuel was a fan of Benfica and Miramar soccer and enjoyed watching his favorite sport on television. He loved eating peanut butter toast and spending time with his loving family.
He is survived by two sons, Antonio M. Amaral and Mario J. Amaral and his wife Jacqueline; a sister, Maria Cecilia Noia; two grandchildren, Jennifer M. Goncalves and her husband Christopher M. and Sarah Caggiano and her husband Nicholas; one great grandchild, Logan X. Caggiano; and nieces and nephews in the U.S.A. and Canada. He was predeceased by a brother, Jose P. Amaral.
Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday, January 16, 2024 from 5-8pm in the Rock Funeral Home, 1285 Ashley Blvd., New Bedford. Funeral, Wednesday, January 17, 2024 at 9am from the funeral home followed by a Funeral Mass at 10am in Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church, 136 Earle St., New Bedford.
