Lydia Duarte

Born in New Bedford, a daughter of the late Joseph Simmons, Sr. and Maria (Travers) Simmons, she was a lifelong resident of the city.

Mrs. Duarte had worked as an inspector at the Acushnet Co. Rubber Division for 28 years until her retirement.

Lydia was a helper and caregiver to many. She loved her family and friends and loved listening to Open Line on the radio. She was very independent and loved going to restaurants. The furthest she traveled was a trip to St. Michael, Azores, with her husband John, to visit where her family was from. Lydia enjoyed family gatherings and interactions with her nieces and nephews.

She is survived by her brother, Richard Simmons of Acushnet; her sister, Natalie Kent of New Bedford; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her siblings, Francelina Moniz, Mary Leite, Incensia Simmons, Joseph Simmons, Jr. and Robert Simmons.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 27, 2022 from 8:30-9:30 a.m. in the Rock Funeral Home, 1285 Ashley Blvd., New Bedford followed by a Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Anthony of Padua Church, 1359 Acushnet Ave., New Bedford. Burial in Rural Cemetery.
