Judith Ann (Pine) Couto, age 75, of New Bedford passed away Saturday June 6, 2015 with her family by her side. She was the wife of Joseph T. Couto with whom she would have celebrated their 56th Wedding Anniversary on June 20th.
Judy was born in New Bedford, a daughter of the late John P. Jr. and Anne (George) Pine, and was a lifelong resident of the city. She graduated from St. Joseph’s Elementary School and New Bedford High School and after marrying, devoted her early years to raising her family. She then worked as a bilingual instructor for the City of New Bedford for eight years. She took great pride in baking and decorating cakes for many friends and relatives, especially the elaborate wedding cakes for all her children’s weddings.
Judy returned to school in 1980 and graduated from Diman Practical School of Nursing in 1982 as an L.P.N. She worked as a Nurse at the former Lakeville Hospital until its closing, and then at the former Mediplex until she retired.
Judy was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church in New Bedford where she had been a former Assistant Girl Scout Leader of Troop 1. She enjoyed floral arranging, travelling and summers at Indian Mound Beach on Buzzards Bay, and was known for taking on the worries of others.
Surviving in addition to her husband are two sons, Mark J. Couto and his wife Lynn M. of Brewster and Thomas J. Couto and his wife Michele D. of Mattapoisett; a daughter, Veronica J. Gagnon and her husband Jeffrey A. of Westport; Her 10 grandchildren whom she adored: Timothy, Nicholas, Kevin, Michael, Caroline Ann and Luke Couto, and Noah, Aidan, Jack and Alec Gagnon; and many godchildren. She was also the mother of George J. Couto who predeceased her in 2002 of pancreatic cancer.
Her Funeral will be held on Thursday, June 11, 2015 at 8:30 am from the ROCK FUNERAL HOME, 1285 Ashley Blvd., New Bedford with a Funeral Mass at 9:30 am in St. Mary’s Church, Tarkiln Hill Rd., New Bedford followed by burial in St. John’s Cemetery. Visiting hours will be held Wednesday from 5 to 8 pm.
