Born in New Bedford, a son of the late Antone and Maria (Amaral) Ferreira he was a lifelong area resident.
Mr. Ferreira was a Veteran of the United States Air Force during the Korean War and an Army Reserve Veteran of 26 years. He was a First Sergeant of the 187th Support Brigade in Brockton. He worked at the Aerovox Corporation and Otis Air Force Base. He was a technician for the Army Reserve in New Bedford, Taunton, Brockton, Boston and Hanscom Air Force Base.
Joseph was the President of Otis AFB Federal Credit Union. He attended many civilian and military schools in the United States. He was awarded many medals. He served as the secretary of Massachusetts Credit Union Share Insurance Corporation, a director of the William J. Cyr Chapter, and a director of St. Anthony’s Federal Credit Union in New Bedford. In recognition for years of dedicated service of the William Cyr Chapter and the Credit Union movement, he was presented with the Out Standing Credit Union Person of the Chapter at Venus de Milo in 1993.
He enjoyed attending Red Sox, Celtics, and Patriots games. He also enjoyed traveling with his wife and dancing at Thad’s and being with his great granddaughter and family. He will be greatly missed by his daughter, grandsons, and great granddaughter.
He is survived by his daughter, Deborah Santos and her husband Mario of New Bedford, two grandsons, Kevin Santos and his wife Megan and Matthew Santos and his wife Kimberly; one great granddaughter, Khloe Hope Santos; and several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Charles, James, and Francis Ferreira.
His funeral will be held on Monday, November 25, 2019 at 9 a.m. from the ROCK Funeral Home, 1285 Ashley Blvd., New Bedford, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of Fatima Church, 4256 Acushnet Ave., New Bedford.
