Born in Sao Miguel Azores, the eldest son of the late Dimas C. Medeiros and Maria Lucia (Lima) Medeiros of New Bedford. He grew up in Sao Miguel, Azores there before coming to America.
Jose Manuel, better known as Joe "Loiro", worked as a scalloper for the majority of his adult life aboard several local fishing vessels. He had a great passion for the sea and was a master at his craft. He would share countless tales of his adventures at sea, usually over a few drinks, to his captive audience of family and friends. Joe lived his life on his own terms, humble, selfless, caring and never complained, even when his health was challenged. He persevered with strength and courage and remained steadfast in his goal to live his best life. He was an active member and patron of the local Madeira Club and the Senhor da Pedra Society Club. He was adored and admired by many, especially his nieces, nephews, and cousins. You could always count on him to be there for whatever, wherever, and whenever you needed his help. Everyone loved “Uncle Joe”. He will be greatly missed but never forgotten and his memory will live on forever. His tales will be passed on to generations to come.
In addition to his mother, he is survived by his siblings, Lucia Sampaio (Francis Mello) of Acushnet and Luis A. Medeiros of Terceira Azores; his nieces and nephews, Danny Sampaio, Stacy Sampaio, (Brian Resendes), Kane Avery and Ashley Medeiros; great-nephews and great-nieces, Aidan Sampaio, Mason Resendes, Logan Resendes, and Chase Resendes, Karter Casey, Kinleigh Casey and Kadyn Casey; his many aunts and uncles, and several cousins.
Joe lived his life to the fullest and is being greeted at the gates of heaven by his beloved brother Graciano “Gus” Medeiros, his adoring father, and many long lost family and friends. May they all rest in eternal peace.
