Zeca,

I’ve been struggling to find words to express the immense loss I feel because words, however kind, can’t mend our heartache.. While I do not have the perfect words to share as I try to process your passing, I know that you will forever live on in our thoughts and words because someone as special as you can never be forgotten. 
Your infectious laughter and zest for the little things in life always brought a smile to my face. You had the kindest eyes and the biggest heart of anyone. 
You will forever be missed. Rest In Eternal Peace brother-in-law. We Love You. 


We would like to offer our condolences to the Furtado family for the loss of Zeca.  He was always a great support to our Dad.  We appreciate all those rides to Logan Airport, all those eBay orders for car/boat parts! We know our Dad will truly miss him, as he was always a companion to him.  Thanks for all you did.

Words can not describe the sadness in my heart with the thought that you’re gone. You had such a big heart and always willing to help us whenever we would ask. Whether it was working on our cars or helping with a home project (funny how you would always get stuck on the ladder or roof). You were always there without hesitation. You were a great brother-in-law and are going to be truly missed. We love you. Rest In Eternal Peace Zeca ❤️

Brother, as I sit here alone in pain and sorrow, so many memories pass through my mind especially the good memories. For example, every time it would snow you knew I was asleep but you would still call me anyway because you would want me to go pick you up to help clean the snow at mom’s house. The funny part of that memory is that I would ask you “don’t you have a car?” and you would reply “I don’t want to lose my parking space in front of my house.”  Every time we get a lot of snow, you will be the first person I think of. I will never forget you. I will miss your kindness and how you were always there when mom and I asked for your help. Rest In Peace my brother. I know you will be looking after all your loved ones.

                I'm proud to have been able to call Jose Maria Furtado my brother, and to have had the experience of loving - and being loved by - someone who set such a good example of what it really means to put family first. No man’s life can be encompassed in one telling and no man’s life is perfect. My brother was perfectly imperfect. I accepted his flaws as he did with me and anyone who knew him. He was perfect to me. 
I like say thank you for all who will attend the Mass at Our Lady of Mount Carmo, especially in these difficult times. I want to express my gratitude to Father Jack and the parishioners who have serve their community and opened up their doors for us. This will be remembered forever!
  For the mystery of life to the outside world, we all grow old. But not to brothers and sisters. We know each other as we always were. We know each other’s hearts. We share private family jokes. We remember family feuds and secrets, family grief’s and joys. We live outside the touch of time. My brother Joe knew this. We know this!

My brother Joe, if there was a will, there was always a way. His passion, was his family. The connection was with his family. He wanted to relieve the difficulties that we faced, especially for his Mom, which he loved so much! When you bring that kind of effort, kindness & Love, that’s when transformation happens. That when change occurs. He understood that, we as brothers and sisters understand that!
Before the year end of 2020, I read an article that resonates with me, an article that reminded me about my brother Joe. A year end remark from Pope Francis, The pope said that the hallmark of an authentic Christen Life. Above all, let’s not forget to say thanks: if we are bearers of gratitude, the world itself will become better, even if for a little bit. My brother Joe knew gratitude. and always gave thanks. For him that was enough to transmit a bit of hope.
The Pope went on to say, the world needs hope. And with gratitude, with this habit of saying thank you, we transmit a bit of hope. Everything is united and everything is connected, and everyone needs to do his or her part wherever we are.”
The pope continued: Even in a time of loss we always must look to remain in joy of encountering Jesus. Let us cultivate joyfulness. Let not us forget that he (The devil), instead, after having deluded us- with whatever temptation—always leaves us with sadness and alone. If we are in Christ, there is no sin and no threat that can ever prevent us from continuing joyfully on our way, together with many other companions on the road. His year end message will be remembered at heart.
My brother Joe always encouraged me to be myself and I remember him saying to appreciate what’s happening in the present. I like to remember him saying, don’t be afraid of being different,  be afraid of being the same as everyone else.

Zeca 
I have known you for over 34 years and have so many memories from back in the day.  We use to hang out as couples , Rui and I , and Nellie and you at either your apartment or mine order Chinese food and just have a good time.  You asked me to be the Godmother of you first newborn which I was honored.  Through the years there where a lot of ups and downs and good day and dark days, but through it all we always knew how much you loved us.  You were willing to always go and run an errand or fix something.  I am sadden that you will not be here in person to see the big moments of your boys lives but they know you will be with them in spirit and we will always keep your memory alive.
Rest in peace Zeca.

You always told me to get up and try again. I never gave up on my dream to live in NYC.  Keeping on trucking as you would say. I will take those words on hard days and have your voice right there as I continue to build my life and fulfill my dreams and aspirations. I will take your strength and courage to keep going. You had a tough battle and watching you made me stronger each day.

I will miss you.

My uncle would let me come to his apartment when I was younger to collect caterpillars with my cousin Tyler (his son). We would keep them in a box to watch them turn into butterflies. I know he will come back to us in the form of a butterfly to watch out for us as our angel.
