Jose Maria Carvalho, age 80, of New Bedford, passed away on Sunday, January 1, 2017 at home following a long illness. He was the loving husband of Otilia Costa Carvalho with whom he shared 53 years of marriage.
Born in Sao Miguel, Azores, Portugal, the son of the late Jose S. and Maria C. Carvalho, he came to the United States in 1970 and settled in New Bedford.
Mr. Carvalho was a high school graduate and served in the Portuguese military where he earned many medals.
Jose was a jack of all trades and talented builder, painter and carpenter.
He loved music, playing the guitar and wrote beautiful poetry. Known as a prankster who made people laugh, he enjoyed caring for his homing pigeons and dogs. Jose was faithful to his church and enjoyed reading the Bible with his fellow members at CFC in Dartmouth.
Surviving in addition to his wife are two daughters, Fernanda Carvalho and Helen Saraiva; two brothers, Antonio Carvalho and wife Rosa and Joao Carvalho and wife Ernestina; two sisters, Maria do Ceu Cordoniz and husband Jaime and Madelena Mattos (his godchild) and husband Daniel; two grandchildren, Tiffany Pereira and husband Irwin Cruz and Chelsey Saraiva; two godchildren, Stephanie Mattos and Mario Jorge Carvalho; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
His Funeral Service will be held on Friday, January 6, 2017 at 10 am in the Rock Funeral Home, 1285 Ashley Blvd., New Bedford followed by burial in Acushnet Cemetery. Visiting hours Thursday 5-9 pm.
