Born in Brighton, MA, son of the late Arthur F. and Florence L. (Coons) Durant, he was a lifelong resident of the city. He studied welding at the New Bedford Vocational High School.
Mr. Durant served in the United States Navy during Korea, attaining the rank of pipe fitter second class.
He was the business owner of Independent Business Machine Service (IBMS) for 27 years, retiring in 1999. Previously, he worked for Smith Office.
John was an excellent welder, having restored numerous Mustangs with his son. He was well known in the car world for his master restorations. He also bought, restored and sold ships bell clocks. In earlier years, he owned a boat and loved fishing.
He is survived by his son, Michael Durant of New Bedford; his granddaughter, Taylor Anne Durant of E. Freetown; his brother, Arthur F. Durant Jr. and his wife Jacqueline of Raynham; and his sister, Geraldine Durant of New Bedford. He was predeceased by his daughter, Lori Ann Durant.
Memorial Visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 1, 2019 from 4:00-6:00 p.m. at the Rock Funeral Home, 1285 Ashley Blvd., New Bedford.
