Gertrude L. Sylvia

Gertrude L. (Sylvaria) Sylvia age 90 , born December 29, 1932 passed away peacefully at home on January 2, 2023 surrounded by the love of her family at her side. She was the beloved wife of Leo H. Sylvia of New Bedford.

Born in Acushnet, MA., a daughter of the late John and Alice (Higgins) Sylvaria.

She was a lifelong area resident, but also spent many winters in Estero Florida. Riverwoods Plantation quickly became her second home. She loved the Riverwoods community and spending time with family at the beach. After working many years at Colonial Textile, Gert retired in 1988. She and Leo traveled extensively in their motor home and made happy memories camping, and fishing around New England. She also looked forward to their annual Labor Day party that they hosted with family and friends. They loved gathering at their condo in Falmouth, MA. where many Sunday gatherings were held. Her family was her greatest treasure.

Gert was preceded in death by her son Ken. She is survived by her husband Leo of 67 years and her children Donna Encarnacao (Arthur), Michael Sylvia (Charlene), Robert Sylvia (Wendy) and Linda Amaral (Francisco). She had 13 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.

Her visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 10, 2023 from 9:00am – 10:30am at ROCK FUNERAL HOME, 1285 Ashley Blvd., New Bedford, MA 02745, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00am at St. Francis Xavier Parish, 125 Main St. Acushnet. Burial in Pine Grove Cemetery.
