George D. “Pa” Holden, 79, of New Bedford, passed away on Wednesday, February 27, 2019 at the Catholic Memorial Home in Fall River. He was the husband of the late Barbara (Sylvia) Holden with whom he shared 55 years of marriage. She passed away in 2016.
Born in Acushnet, son of the late George Oliver Holden and Elsie (Brindle) Holden, he was a lifelong resident of New Bedford.
Mr. Holden was a Firefighter with the New Bedford Fire Department for 27 years, until his retirement due to service connected heart issues. He also worked at My Bread Sunbeam Bakery and Tremblay Bus Company.
George was a 32nd Degree Mason and Shriner in the Star in the East Lodge in New Bedford. He was an avid New England sports fan, enjoyed camping with his wife and dining at his favorite restaurants. He loved the company of his children and his beloved dogs.
Survivors include a son, Michael D. Holden of Tiverton; a daughter, Sherrie L. Souza and her husband David of Swansea; two sisters, Elsie Holden and Nancy Holden of New Bedford; a brother, Robert D. Holden of Oahu, HI; one grandson, Hector Grime of Fall River; several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
Visiting hours will be held on Saturday, March 2, 2019 from 4-7pm in the Rock Funeral Home, 1285 Ashley Blvd., New Bedford. In lieu of flowers, donations in George’s memory may be made to the Catholic Memorial Home, 2446 Highland Ave., Fall River, MA 02720.
