George Ferreira Jr., of New Bedford, Ma passed from this life on Friday, July 17, 2020 after a brave 8-month long battle with Lung Cancer. He passed away at his home with his wife and daughters by his side, he just recently celebrated his 75th birthday.
He was born on Thursday, July 5, 1945 in New Bedford, Ma. He was the only son of the late George Ferreira Sr., and the late Viola Branconnier Ferreira.
In 1964, 56 years ago at the age of 19, he met Simone 17, they dated for 3 years, then he married his princess on May 30, 1967. He became a father for the first time on October 29, 1968 to his daughter Rhonda, then again on November 24, 1969 to his daughter Tracy.
He was employed at Acushnet Company for many years while raising his family. He spent the last 20 years of his work life as a Delivery Driver at Foreign Auto Parts until he retired on April 30, 2014. He enjoyed his years with Foreign Auto due to his love for driving.
As a child he played baseball for Dawson's Brewery and he loved to ride his bike. In his young adult years he enjoyed watching wrestling and roller derby. He liked playing ping pong, enjoyed bowling, roller skating, going fishing, camping and taking in a show at the Drive In, which he referred to as an “auto show”. He enjoyed watching sports. He was a Red Sox, Patriots and Boston Bruins fan. In his retired years he liked watching cooking shows, as he loved to cook and was good at it. His favorite shows included Law & Order, Chicago Pd and Blue Bloods. He loved being in his yard and “puttering around” in his work room in the cellar. He gave his life to Jesus and his faith grew strong. He enjoyed watching spiritual teachings on tv, listening to Elvis Presley and gospel music. He loved reading his Bible, Revelations was his favorite chapters. He loved going out to eat with his family along with enjoying a beer and his favorite drinks were C & C and Jack & Coke.
In 1976 he created and organized a group he named PHP (People Helping People). It was funded by members weekly donations that provided Birthday and Christmas gifts, clothes, food, special holiday treats and parties to all the children that were homeless and staying at the Saint Mary’s Home in New Bedford. He had the biggest heart and would give the shirt off his back to anyone who needed it. It was important to him to be able to help others in need. He had a sweet smile and a great sense of humor and always made people laugh.
He was a dedicated, hardworking, loving family man, a great father who took the utmost pride in caring for his family. He was a peacemaker and showed unconditional love as a husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather and great grandfather(papa). He was a blessing to anyone that was lucky enough to have known him and his loving heart. He will be forever missed.
He leaves his wife Simone, his 2 daughters, Rhonda Borden and husband Jim Borden, Tracy Docca and fiance’ Rick Fournier, 5 grandchildren, Scott Borden, Amanda Ferreira, Seth Borden, Hailey Docca, Chase Borden, and 3 great grandchildren, Keira Borden, Sofia Dealmeida and Orion Borden. Including several cousins, nieces, nephews, sister and brother in-laws and one godchild.
The family wishes to thank Fairhaven Oncology for their care throughout this process and Community Nurses of Fairhaven Hospice for their kindness and support in his final weeks.
A private Celebration of Life Service will be held by the family and Memorial Donations may be made to the Lung Cancer Foundation of America and/or the LUNGevity Foundation.
