Born in New Bedford, he was the son of the late Frank J. and Wanda B. (Turek) Golen.
Mr. Golen was a graduate of Wentworth College and received a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering.
He worked with the Department of Public Works as a Civil Engineer for the City of Springfield from May 1964 until he retired in March 1997.
Sonny loved to travel and go polka dancing with his lifelong companion Kathy. Avid supporters of the Happy Louie & Julcia Polka band, they danced weekends wherever the band played. Also, they belonged to the band’s Travel Club. They traveled to Hawaii, Poland for the “First World Polka Festival in Poland”, Cruises to Bermuda, Eastern & Western Caribbean, Montreal and Nova Scotia, Canada and Las Vegas twice. Sometimes, the entire band would go. We were blessed with the amazing friendship of Louie and Julcia over many years of happy memories. We also traveled to Brazil. He was a kind and friendly person who would help anyone in need whether he knew them or not.
He is survived by his lifelong companion Kathleen Pope of CT; his niece, Donna Chase of Dartmouth; his nephew, Edward Lawrence and his wife April of Fairhaven; his brother-in-law, Roger Lawrence of Fairhaven; two great nieces, Emily Chase of Dartmouth and Brittany Lawrence of CT; and his step- great niece, Brittany Macomber of Fairhaven. He was predeceased by his sister, Evelyn Lawrence.
