Donald F. Gurney, age 84, of East Freetown, passed away, Friday, December 9, 2011 at home surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of Miriam Selena (Oothout) Gurney with whom he shared 59 years of marriage.
A lifelong Freetown resident, Donald was the son of the late Herbert Francis Gurney and Arletta (Whalin) Gurney.
Mr. Gurney was a graduate of Dighton High School Class of 1947. He worked at the Goodhue Lumber Company in East Freetown and he was and was a United States Postal Carrier for 28 years until his retirement. He then worked as a part-time delivery person for Affair with Flowers for 15 years where he earned the nickname “Frosty”. Donald was a veteran of the United States Navy serving in World War II. He was a member of the Freetown VFW Post #6643 and the Lion’s Club, Cub Master for the Cub Scouts for 15 years, head deacon at East Freetown Congregational Christian Church and a member of the church’s couple’s club and an elections registrar for the Town of Freetown. He enjoyed bowling, tennis and traveling and spending time with family and friends.
Surviving in addition to his wife, is his son Donald W. Gurney and his wife JoAnn of East Freetown, a daughter; Lauren J. Collins and her husband Christopher of East Freetown, two grandchildren; Craig Donald Collins of East Freetown and Justin Marc Collins of Raynham and many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Charles Richard Gurney, Arletta “Polly” Clark, Gordon Gurney and Catherine Wyand.
His funeral will be held Wednesday, December 14, 2011 at 10 am at the East Freetown Congregational Christian Church, 4 Washburn Road, East Freetown, MA. Visiting hours will be Tuesday, December 13, 2011 from 4-8pm at the ROCK Funeral Home, 1285 Ashley Blvd, New Bedford, MA. Burial at Chace Cemetery, East Freetown.
