Donald A. Almeida, age 88, of New Bedford, peacefully passed away on Wednesday, January 3, 2024 at Alden Court Nursing Home after a valiant battle with pneumonia. He was the beloved husband of the late Edna D. (Mello) Almeida, with whom he shared 58 years of marriage.
Born in New Bedford, he was the son of the late Antone and Mary (Sylvia) Almeida, and the brother of the late Louise Furtado (Norman) and the late Cynthia Sullivan (Dennis).
Donald was a graduate of the New Bedford Vocational High School and served in the United States Army. He worked at Almacs Supermarkets for most of his career, then Sears until his retirement. He loved gardening and always had several carpentry projects in the works. Donald had a great sense of humor and was quite the practical joker. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends.
He is survived by his loving daughter, Karen Polvere and her husband Joseph of Naples, FL; several nieces and nephews, and special cousins.
Donald was fortunate enough to be the recipient of a kidney donation by his cousin Cherilyn Almeida. Her selfless act provided him with an enjoyable extra 10 years of life for which he was beyond grateful.
