David Silva, age 89, of New Bedford, passed away Tuesday, January 15, 2013 at home surrounded by his loving family. He was the devoted husband of Rita (Bellefeuille) Silva, to whom he had been married for 64 years.
Born in New Bedford, a son of the late Manuel and Ludivina (Daniel) Silva, he was a lifelong resident of the area.
Mr. Silva served in the US Army during WWII, receiving a Purple Heart. He was a Postal Clerk for 33 years, retiring in 1981. He was a member and past officer of the Panthers Club, former coach and officer of the Whaling City Youth Baseball League, former member of the Whaling City Golf Course and was active in senior bowling league.
Besides his wife he is survived by five children, Michael Silva and his wife Cheryl, Steven Silva, Dr. Jeffrey P. Silva and his wife Corinne, Christine Bergevin and her husband James and David Silva and his wife Sandra; nine grandchildren, Joshua, Lisa, Kevin, Eric, Elizabeth, Aden and Connor Silva, Adam and Jenna Bergevin; one great grandson, Samuel Silva; two sisters, Elsie Rapozo and Beatrice Burdine and several nieces and nephews.
He was also brother of the late Mary Santos, Anna Langlois, Irene Teixeira, Manuel, Edmund and Sarah Silva and father-in-law of the late Cynthia Silva.
Relatives and friends are invited to his funeral mass Friday, January 18, 2012 at 9 AM in St. Mary’s Church, Tarkiln Hill Rd., New Bedford. Burial will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery. Visiting hours, Thursday 5-8 PM in the ROCK Funeral Home, 1285 Ashley Blvd., New Bedford.
