David J. Carvalho, 69, of New Bedford, passed away on Tuesday, August 12, 2014 at home following a brief illness. He was the beloved life partner of Rose M. (Afonso) Vieira with whom he shared 18 loving years.
Born in Acushnet, son of the late John and Beatrice (Marques) Carvalho, he had lived most of his life in New Bedford. He was a graduate of New Bedford High School.
David was a proud firefighter for the city of New Bedford for 31 years, most at station 6, until his retirement.
He also drove bus for American Eagle and truck for several companies.
He loved classic cars and most of all boating on Buzzards Bay and the Elizabethan Islands.
His favorite place to be was home with his beloved Rose and on Quick’s Hole Beach.
Surviving in addition to Rose is a step-son, Jason J. Amaral and fiancé Trish Reopell of Easthampton; a brother, Stephen Carvalho of New Bedford; a nephew, Jonathan Carvalho; aunt and uncle Elsie and Agostinho Gonsalves; aunt Maggie Carvalho; sister-in-law Ellen Cournoyer and husband George of Acushnet and their children Melissa Cournoyer and Michael Cournoyer and wife Kayla.
His Funeral will be held on Saturday, August 16, 2014 at 9am from the Rock Funeral Home, 1285 Ashley Blvd., New Bedford followed by a Funeral Mass at 10am in St. John Neumann Church, 157 Middleboro Rd., East Freetown. Burial private. Visiting hours Friday 5-8pm. Donations may be made in his memory to the New Bedford Fire Museum, 51 Bedford St, New Bedford or to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.
