Arthur J. Caron, Jr. age 80, passed away Friday, January 19, 2018 at his residence surrounded by his loving family. Born in New Bedford, he was the son of the late Arthur J. Caron and Rose (Tracy) Caron.
Mr. Caron was a special counsel for labor relations for the City of New Bedford. He graduated from New Bedford High School and received his bachelors degree from Northeastern University. He earned his law degree from Boston College Law School and a masters degree in Labor Law from New York University.
Upon completion of his academic programs he entered the United States Army and served as a Captain in the Judge Advocate General's Corps with the First Calvary Division in Korea and later in the Office of the Secretary of Defense during the tenures of Secretaries Robert McNamara and Clark Clifford.
He returned to New Bedford in 1968 and joined the law firm of Downey and Jacobs. He served as Assistant City Solicitor during the administrations of Edward F. Harrington, George Rogers, John A. Markey and briefly with Brian Lawler before being appointed by Governor Michael Dukakis in 1982 as General Counsel to the Office of Employee Relations for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
Upon completion of his term as General Counsel he returned to private practice and was appointed Assistant City Solicitor by former Mayor John Bullard, City Solicitor by former Mayor Rosemary Tierney and served as labor counsel to former Mayors Frederick Kalisz, Jr., Scott Lang and Mayor Jon Mitchell.
Mr. Caron is married to Margarita (Grau) Caron who he met in Washington, D.C. where she worked at the Organization of American States and the Inter-Development Bank. They have two children, Dr. Suzanne M. Caron who practices medicine in New Bedford. Their son, James A. Caron is Managing Director with Morgan Stanley Investment Management in New York City. They have four grandchildren, Benjamin and Caroline Esposito and Olivia and Sophia Caron.
His visitation will be held at ROCK Funeral Home, 1285 Ashley Blvd., New Bedford on Friday, January 26, 2018 from 4-7pm. His Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday at St Mary Church, 343 Tarkiln Hill Road, New Bedford at 9:30am. Everyone is invited to meet directly at church. Burial to follow at Sacred Heart Cemetery. In lieu of flowers doantions in his memory may be made to the American Brain Tumor Association, 8550 W.
