THOMAS EARL SCANLON, 90, entered into his heavenly home on Wednesday, January 7, 2015. He was born in St. Edward’s Hospital, New Albany, Indiana, on July 21, 1924. He was the son of John Thomas Scanlon and Martha Jane Ackley Scanlon. Tom graduated from New Albany High School in 1942, and soon began working for Steiden Store in New Albany. Steiden’s became Winn-Dixie, and he stayed with Winn-Dixie for 42 years as Market Manager and Store Manager. Tom married Alleen Wiggs on June 3, 1944. He has been a loyal and active member of Centenary United Methodist Church since 1944. He worked diligently with “Christ’s Kitchen” and “Feeding the Needy” programs. Tom was an ardent sportsman and participated in sports events throughout his life; golf being his favorite sport.
He was predeceased by his parents; sister, June; and nephew, Scott Jones.
Tom is survived by his wife of 70 years, Alleen Scanlon; daughter, Susan Dedman and husband, John David; grandson, Drew Miller; granddaughter, Carrie Dunham and husband, Tony; three great-grandchildren, Elizabeth, Makayla and Cody; sisters, Anna Louise Loughmiller and husband, Gale, and Doris Jean Jones; nieces, Donna June Farnsley, Linda Arnold, and Abby Jones; and nephews, Michael, Jared, Jacob, Colton and Boston Jones, Bryan and Dan Loughmiller, and Eddie and Bill Arnold.
Tom’s family wishes to thank Lincoln Hills Nursing Home for all the kindness and heartfelt care shown Tom during his 3-1/2 year stay there.
Visitation will be 11:00 am ~ 3:00 pm Monday at Kraft Funeral Service, 708 E. Spring Street, New Albany. His Funeral Service will be 3:00 pm Monday in the Kraft Spring Street Chapel with private burial in Fairview Cemetery, New Albany IN.
Contributions in remembrance of Tom should be given to Centenary United Methodist Church, 309 E. Spring Street, New Albany.
