Sally was preceded in death by her parents Clara Adolph and Arthur Edwards, husband Donald Taylor and fiancé Jerry Spencer, and her three siblings Albert, Mary, and Clara Lee Edwards. She is survived by her son, Jude David Rake (J.D.), his wife Kathleen Rake; her grandchildren Jennifer (Peter) Schumann and Megan (Steven) Schnell; and her great granddaughters Joelle and Baylee Schnell.
Sally was born and raised in New Albany Indiana, graduating from New Albany High School. She gave birth to her only child on October 7, 1958, with her first husband Jude F. Rake. Sally built a home as a single mother for not only her and her son Jude, but many people in the community; always offering a support system and love to anyone needing a helping hand. Sally worked with passion and dedication for 44 years at Sonoco Products as a production worker, often referring to her co-workers as family. She met the love of her life, Jerry Spencer, during her career at Sonoco and even though they didn’t make it to the alter, Sally was known for saying, “In our eyes we were married. Marriage is how you love and treat one another, not whether you have a piece of paper between you.” If you knew Sally, you knew how much she came alive when she was square dancing. She was very active in several associations spreading her passion for square dancing locally and nationally. She was President of her home club Sunnyside Solos Square Dance Club and served the Kentuckiana Square Dance Association in several leadership roles including President.
Sally was known for her optimism, independence, and feisty spirit. No matter what was happening in her life, she was a loyal friend, mother, and grandmother first. Her caring and loving personality is something we can all learn from and admire. She is certainly square dancing and catching up with all those that passed before her right now. She will be missed by the many lives she touched.
A visitation for Sally will be held Saturday, October 29, 2022, from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM at Kraft Funeral Service, 2776 Charlestown Rd, New Albany, Indiana 47150, followed by a funeral service at 2:00 PM.
Expressions of sympathy may be made in lieu of flowers to Psi Iota Xi sorority where she was an active member for many years, or The Center for Women and Families.
