Larry James Hammond, 71, passed away peacefully on Friday, Oct. 1, 2021 at Masonic Homes KY. He was born in Louisville, KY, and loved his life in New Albany, Indiana, where he had many life-long friends and a loving family who adored him. He was the son of the late Betty J. Hammond and Charles Edwards. He was preceded in death by his brother, John Hammond.
Jimmy was a graduate of New Albany High School Class of 1968, a United States Army veteran, 11 Bravo Ten, who was stationed in Germany (1970-1972) during the Vietnam War. There was no bigger fan of sports than Jimmy, whether it was as a spectator, umpire, or participant. He ran mini-marathons, won the World Series of Softball in 1981 with the Kentucky Bourbons Professional Softball team and hit a hole-in-one at Chariot Run Golf Course.
Some of Jimmy’s greatest joys in life were attending the University of Kentucky football and basketball games, and he was often seen courtside at his alma mater, New Albany High School, cheering on the Bulldogs. He also loved music, concerts, traveling, movies, Old Westerns, riding his bike, and spending time with this family and friends. Jimmy was a kind, thoughtful man who made an impression on anyone he met.
Jimmy had a beautiful, tenor voice that he shared at weddings and at the Christmas mass at St. Mary’s.
He took great pride in his work as a graphic artist and finished his career at MacKay Gravure Systems in Florence, KY.
Jimmy is a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and The American Legion.
He is survived by his loving wife, Terri Kay Jordan of New Albany, IN, daughters, Elizabeth Iredale (Billy), Lara Hammond (Gary Popp), step-sons, Jason Jordan and Jeremy Jordan (Kelsey) and grandchild, Lucas Iredale, step-grandchildren, Anna, Joshua, Jonah, and Joseph Jordan.
He is also survived by his brother, Don Hammond (Michelle), sisters, Barbara Sillings (Todd) and Sheila Hammond (Brad Goforth). Jimmy has many nieces and nephews whom he cherished.
The family would like to thank Masonic Homes KY, Sam Swope Care Center, and especially the nurses and assistants of Chandler House. They will always be part of our family in appreciation of their loving care of Jimmy.
