John Frederick Kunk; age; 68, passed away on February 22, 2024. He was born in Coldwater, Ohio on September 18, 1955, to the late Ray and Emma (Mueller) Kunk. John grew up on the family farm as the eleventh of fourteen siblings. His early years centered around family and farm chores. John attended Versailles High School and continued his education earning his Bachelor of Arts degree from the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, and later his masters from Spalding University. He began his education career for the Baldwin Piano & Organ Company in Cincinnati and Tampa, Florida. Moving back to Cincinnati then later to Winchester, Virginia where John shared his love of music as an elementary school music teacher for over a decade. He continued his teaching career in Kentucky. He retired in New Albany, Indiana spending his days with his loving wife and grandkids.
John was a loving husband, brother, father and grandfather. He loved spending time with his grandchildren, making each person feel important, always teaching them to “pass it forward.” Beyond his family and his career, John coached basketball and officiated his children’s swimming tournaments. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and a choir director. He loved Cincinnati Reds baseball, and classical music, especially opera. John’s lesson to his children and family was the importance of Faith, Hope, and Love. The greatest of these is love, and he loved us all.
Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by a stepson, John Slaten; and siblings, Mary Lou Mohlman and Tom Kunk.
He leaves behind his loving wife, Laura Kunk; children, Maria Neumann (Brian), Aaron Kunk (Kelly James), Andrew Kunk (Mackenzie); step-children, James Slaten (Megan), and Jaqueline Slaten; six grandchildren, Colin, Josiah, Lincoln, Ameila, Gwendolyn, and Declan; siblings, Evelyn, Sally, Orville, Doris, Emmy, Mark, Gary, Roger, Joe, Lawrence, and Lorraine as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, February 27, 2024, from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM at Kraft Funeral Service, 2776 Charlestown Road, New Albany, Indiana. A funeral will be held at 2 PM following a service.
John will be laid to rest in Kraft-Graceland Memorial Park following services.
