I met John around '78.  John was on the wrestling team at Providence so he was working out which inspired me to workout as well.  I remember we tried to stay in the sauna as long as we could (he was always trying to lower his class to wrestle) and we'd play chess in the sauna to pass the time.  We also went fishing a lot. Man, the fishing holes he knew were all over the place.  From Patoka to Bardstown, we wet many lines and talked a lot about life.  
We used to spend a lot of time at Barbara and Todd's place.  Playing video games and listening to Willie Nelson are some really good memories I have from that time.
One day, John shared a book with me called Rhinoceros Success.  It was the catalyst that taught me how to set goals and achieve them.  Two short years later I moved away from New Albany to start a new life in Ft Lauderdale.  So thank you John Hammond.  You honestly made a difference in my life that I'm very grateful for.

I have a memory of a Christmas several years ago.  It makes me smile.  John was my son-in-law.  Sam and I bought him a custom made, hand wrapped fishing rod with his name on it.   He was like a child.  He started jumping around and clapping his hands.  He grabbed me and kissed my cheek.  He said " You actually thought about what you bought me."   I get lots of gifts that have had no thought put into them.  He ran downstairs and got his reel, put it on and pretended to fish in the yard.  The pond was frozen.
John was a unique combination of looks, charisma and charm.  He could sell ice cubes to Eskimos and have them coming back for more. He also made the best fried crappie EVER!!! Best fish I've ever eaten.

I dated and was married to John for 12 years. We had two children together (Miranda Rose & John Wayne). I met John through my dad. He was my dad's insurance man. Dad hated when John would say he'd pay dads insurance policy if he'd let us date.
There was never any doubt he loved his family. John had three children and loved them all very much.
I will miss John's sense of humor the most. He was one of the funniest people I've ever met.
He could walk into a room of strangers and you would think everyone had known him for years. By the time he was ready to leave the room would be chanting his name. He could always make me laugh, even when I was wanting to punch him in the face.
He had the biggest  personality  I've ever known.
He loved his hunting, fishing, suntanning & beer.
His legacy of looks and sense of humor will live on in his children. They remind me of him everyday.
I will miss him greatly!
My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone in the Hammond family.

I am so sorry to hear about John.  I had the privilege of being one of John's wrestling coaches when he was at Providence.  Besides being a good wrestler he so funny to be around.  He always made you laugh.  May the many wonderful memories of John comfort you during this difficult time.  Your family is in my prayers.
