Obituary of Joan Irene Miller
Joan Meng Miller, beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away in Delray Beach, Florida on March 11th, 2024 at the age of 90. Joan was born on January 29th, 1934, in Oak Harbor, Ohio to Esther and Elroy Meng, where she grew up on the family farm. She was the youngest of four siblings - Douglas, Betty, Margie, and Joyce. She met Frank Todaro while still in high school, and together they had four children; Gaelyn, Michael, Daniel, and Valerie; and three stepchildren Phillip, Evelyn, and Stephen. While the children were growing up, they sometimes spent time in Acapulco, Mexico, where Joan earned a reputation for her ability to beat anyone at a friendly game of chess out on the beach. After her divorce from Frank, Joan went to work at Sears, where she became one of the first women in the furniture/carpet and later the electronics department to work as a commission salesperson. In 1989, she met and married James K. Miller. Together they spent much of their retirement years doing one of the things Joan loved best - traveling. They often took bus tours, exploring much of the U.S. and cruise ships to distant lands. Until the very end, Joan was almost unbeatable at her board games and cards. She loved classic movies and the music of Dean Martin and his contemporaries. As her body began to limit her, she still loved travel in whichever way she could manage. But - more than anything - she loved her big family, including her grandchildren: Tracy, Laura, Ryan, Billy, Nathan, Lisa, Nicole, Michele, Matt, Sheldon, Daniel Jr., Shawn, Giovanni, and Robby. Joan didn't fear death. She had a strong, spiritual belief in the afterlife and angels. Because of that, those of us in her family are certain we have a new angel in heaven who will be taking particular care in watching over us.
