Helen A. Spurlock 88, passed away peacefully at her home in New Albany, IN on Friday, December 15th. She was born on 03/12/1935 in New Albany, IN. She was the daughter of Mildred Gunn and Hubert Sullivan.
Helen had an art for business and worked as a bookkeeper for many companies in the Louisville area including Courier-Journal, Louisville Cap, and Huntington Furniture. She left the corporate world in the mid-70s to pursue sole proprietorship with her first husband Kenneth Blackman. Together they owned and operated a small grocery store, a laundry mat, and opened Handy Andy’s Country Kitchen in Elizabeth, Indiana. After many successful years as a sole proprietor, she returned to the corporate world and remained until her retirement. She retired as a business manager for Jewish Family & Career Services of Louisville. She enjoyed traveling throughout the US and Europe. She also loved square dancing, performing at many venues across the country. She was president of the Daffy Dancers of Louisville. Helen liked watching game shows and shopping through the QVC and HSN networks.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her stepfather Charles Davis, her husband CB Spurlock, her three brothers, Harold Davis, Larry Davis, and Randy Davis, and her two sisters, Sue Weatherford and Sharon Missi. She is survived by her two daughters Deborah Herrera (Ted) of Brownsburg, IN, Rebecca Philpott of Sellersburg, IN, and her stepdaughter Pam Deuser (Rick) of Winter Garden, FL, her grandchildren, Victoria, Mary, Devan, Kyle, and Erik; greatgrandchildren, Smith and Isla. Her sister, Linda Badger of Grove City, OH.
A visitation for Helen will be held on Saturday, December 23, 2023, from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM with a funeral service to follow at 4:00 PM at Kraft Funeral Service, 2776 Charlestown Road, New Albany, Indiana.
Helen will be laid to rest in Kraft Graceland Memorial Park next to the late Ken Robertson.
