Cora was a mother to everyone she met, whether they liked it or not. She loved people selflessly, unabashedly, and unconditionally. She took care of her family, friends, and community from childhood to her last day. Cora had a laugh that could fill up a room, a mind as sharp as a knife, and a lap made to comfort children and sometimes adults, too.
Cora May Bruce was born in Brawley, CA, on August 7, 1948. She met Anthony Jerome Huffines in 1970 when she got off a bus in Columbus, GA. She cooked him fried chicken so he married her, and it was the best decision he made in the 52 years they shared. Together, they lifted their family from poverty and raised four children of their own: Jason Paul, Caroline Jane, Jenny Lynn, and Taylor Alan. She welcomed Jennifer Lynn Greenwood and Robert Stanley Sightler Jr. to her family when they took Taylor and Jenny off her hands, and always enjoyed saying she liked them better than her own children. She considered Kyle Moreillion and many of her kids’ friends her own children by the strength of love, along with many foster children and others with no place else to go.
Cora endured the passing of her sister Gloria Evelyn Pugh and two young brothers, her mother Emma Jane Wadsack Streets, her stepfather Frederick Streets, her father Douglas Franklin Bruce, her niece Jennifer Faith Pugh, her grandson Arthur Alan Huffines, and many beloved friends. They certainly are happy to taste her cooking again. She left her heart with her grandchildren: Emma Lee Huffines, Evelyn May Huffines, Amelia Josephine Huffines, Henry Alexander Huffines, and Robert Stanley Sightler III. She knows her grandchild to be born this May is in good hands.
Cora raised her family as she attended college, graduating from Indiana University in 1992. Her career was one of service, beginning as a social worker for the elderly and retiring as Finance Director of the New Albany Housing Authority. She worked tirelessly to secure services and facilities for the downtrodden, the poor, and the elderly. There are thousands of members of her community who will never know she helped them, but nothing was expected in return.
Cora enjoyed reading, cooking, and video games, but most of all, being home with her family. Without her, Huff will have to learn to fry his own chicken, her children will finally have to fix their own mistakes, and her grandkids’ macaroni and cheese will never taste quite right. Those that knew her will always hear her laugh, taste her flawless cooking, and feel the warmth of her love.
