Carl served his country honorably in the Indiana Army National Guard and retired from the Guard after 28 years of service. He was retired from International Harvester/Navistar, worked as a security guard at the Kentucky Home Life Building, and was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church. He was also a member of American Legion Post 42, past President of UAW CAP Council, former member of the Lafayette Township Advisory Board, and Democratic Precinct Committeeman.
Carl was preceded in death by brothers, Jerome “Smiley” Schindler and David Schindler.
Surviving are his wife of 65 years, Goldie Lou (Kent) Schindler; daughter, Tori Shumate (Jason); and he was proud papa to Landyn and Ella Grace Shumate. Also surviving are sisters, Alberta Peay and Joyce Schindler; brothers, Donnie, Bobby, Kenny, Mike, and Joe Schindler; and sister-in-law, Bonnie Schindler.
Visitation will be 1 pm to 6 pm Sunday and after 9 am Monday at Kraft Funeral Service, 708 E. Spring Street, New Albany, Indiana. A Funeral Mass will be held 11 am Monday at Holy Family Catholic Church with burial following in Kraft-Graceland Memorial Park, New Albany.
During his last years, Carl enjoyed going to Peggy’s Place Adult Life Center; therefore, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Peggy’s Place Adult Life Center, 1730 Audubon Drive, Ste. 100, New Albany IN 47150.
