Jan was born on January 11, 1937, in New Albany, IN. She was the daughter of John and Artis Main. She graduated from New Albany High School in 1954 and Kentucky Baptist Hospital Nursing School in 1956.
On August 18, 1957, she was united in marriage to Ronald William Craig at Central Christian Church in New Albany, IN. Jan and Ron enjoyed a wonderfully prosperous marriage and celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary this year.
Jan’s love for Ron and her family was first and foremost. She cherished her friends and touched the lives of so many; including all of her children’s and grandchildren’s friends. There was no meet, match, play, recital, game, assembly, graduation, milestone or event that “Granny and Poppy” did not attend. Jan shared her joy with everyone and taught her family to celebrate friendships, family and even the little things in life.
As a nurse, Jan fulfilled her lifelong passion for caregiving through her career at Floyd Memorial Hospital. She was a member of Saint Mary of the Annunciation Catholic Church, a board member for the Floyd County Board of Health over 40 years; and served the American Red Cross New Albany Floyd County blood bank for almost 15 years. Among other licenses and certifications, Jan was certified by the American Athletic Union, as a stroke judge in swimming and promoted the sport for her own children, grandchildren and many others. She was President of Psi Iota Xi and Alpha Club. She served as President of the Parent Teacher Association; and as troop leader, and biggest supporter of each endeavor undertaken by her children and grandchildren.
Her affinity for compassion made her a fierce advocate and fighter for her patients and the less fortunate; and a perfect Wife, Mother and Grandmother.
Jan is survived by two sons and two daughters: Brad Craig (Tammy Stebbins Craig) of Gainesville, FL, Doctor Eric Craig (Carolyn Rudy Craig) of Newburgh, Indiana, Leslie Craig Henderzahs, Esquire (Allen) and Doctor Kimberly Craig Hartlage (Lenny). She is also survived by seven grandchildren: Jan Shelby Henderzahs Weicht (Cory Weicht), Helaina Craig Todd (Joe Todd), Doctor Caroline Hillary Henderzahs, Doctor Cody William Craig, Scarlett Hartlage Shine (Jack Shine), Madelyn Claire Henderzahs, and Francesca Sophia Hartlage. She is survived by her twin sister, Phyllis Ann Wright from Texas and niece, Tara Ann Melancon.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Artis Main and grandparents Herbert and Laura Lamb of New Albany.
