Rose was born April 13, 1917 to Louis and Katherine (nee Znak) Lee in Selkirk. She had 4 siblings John, Henry, Mary and Pat. Her parents had both immigrated to Canada. Her father from Canton China and her mother from Austria. She inherited her parent’s strong work ethic and was employed at her father’s restaurant for many years. It was there that she met her future husband Fred Appelt. She said he had come into the restaurant with a bunch of men working for MTS. After much coaxing by Fred, she finally agreed to go out with him and they were married in 1961.
They resided in Selkirk for a few years and then moved to Winnipeg, finally settling on Edison Avenue. Rose loved shopping with her sister Pat and told many stories of riding the bus to Eatons to purchase her favorite hats. She was rarely seen without one. Rose loved camping and Fred and Rose parked their trailer at Winnipeg Beach for many years enjoying their time on the beach and the friendships made there.
After Fred passed in 1996, Rose moved into an apartment where she resided for many years. While there, she was able to experience her first airplane ride, flying to Victoria with her niece Cheryl and family. She was so excited about the flight, the ocean, and most of all Butchart Gardens and the flowers.
Rose entered Golden Door Geriatric Center at the age of 93 after a fall left her unable to reside on her own. She survived 2 surgeries for broken hips while in her 90’s. Rose passed away peacefully at Golden Door Geriatric Center on March 16, 2021 just a few weeks shy of her 104th birthday. She was predeceased by her husband Fred, parents, and siblings. She is survived by many nieces and nephews.
Heartfelt thanks to the staff at Golden Door Geriatric Center for the compassionate care they gave Rose.
Rose has been cremated and will be interred next to her husband Fred in the Everlasting Garden at Green Acres Funeral Home and Cemetery on March 22, 2021.
