With great sadness, we announce Rita’s passing on January 19 2023, in Winnipeg, at the age of 94 years. She is survived locally by her brother, Tom (Adeline); her great nieces Jay-Ann (Bruce); Robyn (Larry), and their families. She is also remembered by her many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and their families all across Canada.
She was predeceased by her life partner Cecil Jarvis, her parents Christian and Katharina (née Schnell), and her siblings Roy, Ben, Ruth, Blanche, Ernie, Clarence, Cecilia, and Violet.
Rita was born July 16, 1928, in Ste. Agathe, Manitoba. She spent her childhood surrounded by her many siblings on the family farm. At the age of 16, she left home to pursue an education in hairstyling, and was ahead of the times in establishing her own independent business. Rita and Cecil enjoyed travelling the world, and made many trips to Great Britain for Cecil’s RCAF 435 Squadron reunions. Locally, Rita and her girlfriends went camping for many years, playing cards, cooking outdoors, and enjoying each other’s company. She also loved going to the symphony, travelogue shows, plays, and concerts. She spent as much time as possible with her many nieces and nephews, attending every family celebration she could.
She remained fiercely independent, despite health challenges in her last few years. With her characteristic frankness, she accepted her difficulties and still found a way to move forward on her own terms. She will be remembered for her fighting spirit, determination, and was a role model to us all throughout her whole life. She will be dearly missed by all who had the pleasure to know her.
Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held Friday, January 27 2023 at 2 PM at The Westhaven in the Windsor Room (3033 Portage Avenue). Family interment will follow at a later date.
The family thanks all healthcare staff that helped care for Rita over the past few years, as well as all the staff at the Westhaven. Rita considered this her home for many years and made many lasting friendships there.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Rita’s name to the Multiple Sclerosis Society, Portage la Prairie chapter, or to a charity of your choice.
