Richard tried a few careers before he settled on his passion for promoting the health and safety of all workers. He returned to school, graduating from Red River College in 2010 with a diploma in Occupational Health and Safety. In 2012, he opened ABA Safety Consulting Inc. and spent the next 10 years supporting his clients and building friendships. He loved teaching new and experienced staff on a variety of health and safety topics and was a strong advocate, assisting many small and medium businesses receive their COR Certification. He was continuously upgrading his knowledge in order to ensure his clients received the best, up to date, safety policies and procedures they required in order to maintain their COR Certification. He studied hard to achieve his National Construction Safety Officer designation.
Richard was a huge sports fan, having played and coached hockey for many years. Over the last few years, he held season tickets for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, the Winnipeg Jets and the Manitoba Moose and spent many hours in the stands cheering with his cousin Troy, friend Norm and of course, mom Jeannine. We joked that he had his own parking spots at both Portage Place and Investors Group Field. Richard and Troy would spend hours planning their Tailgate Party for the Banjo Bowl. Everyone knew they should not call when an away game was on or they might hear him yelling at the TV.
Richard was loved by everyone. He could talk to anyone and if he knew you well, he would start out the conversation with “Hey Beautiful” or “Hey Brother” but loved to talk about motorcycles, sports or the bad drivers in Winnipeg. He loved to cook and entertain. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle and going to classic car events. He loved being outdoors at the cabin or in his boat fishing and a lot of good conversations took place when the fish weren’t biting. He could fix almost anything. He loved to tinker with his motorcycle and was in the process of restoring his ’59 Thunderbird with his friend Ron.
Richard was predeceased by his father in 2018. He will be sadly missed by his mother, Jeannine, sister, Lori-Ann, brother-in-law Randy, nieces Marina and Jappreet, cousin Troy, along with numerous family members, friends and clients. Special thanks to Wendy Tang for always being there for Richard over the last few years.
