My heart is heavy with this news. I knew Ed only briefly but felt he allowed me to know him well. We met through a mutual friend in Toronto and I had the great pleasure of making music with Ed on a few occasions. I had produced and played a couple of instruments on several songs when Ed came into town to track vocals at my house. I had met him before so I knew I liked him but over the days and weeks we spent recording I got to meet both the artist and the man that was Ed Legal. He was kind and charming - he flirted with my wife and told me I was a luck guy - we both swooned a little. And laughed. Ed was funny as well. His voice was singular. Powerful and vulnerable, sometimes simultaneously, and his words carried a weight that belied their intense fragility. He was also just a guy prone to bouts of intense humanity, sometimes with some artistic flourish. He also, as I recall,  liked to take the piss, as the English say.  I have a very fond memory of tracking Ed singing and doing some of his poetry and, somehow, not having a sufficient beverage supply. Tea and water to start, then whiskey for his voice, a beer just because, something sweet and bubbly, juice - again for his voice, and a coffee to perk him up. I knew he was playing with our mutual friend - who was, and is always a gracious, if in that moment frustrated host, and I loved it.  I feel very fortunate to be able to go to my recordings and call Ed into my life, if only for a moment. Miss you my friend. Love, respect and rock n roll. Peace go with you Brother.

Ed was a big part of my youth. I was with him the first I saw the northern lights and just like the sky that night, Ed had a way of capturing your attention. I will always remember his stories, trivia cards at the truck stop, the goofy way he said popcorn and his laughter. My heartfelt condolences go out to his family.
