Denis Philippe Joubert

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Denis Joubert, aged 100 years, at Repos Jolys in St. Pierre-Jolys, Manitoba on May 30, 2024.

He will be lovingly remembered by his sister Rose Girard; by his children Madeleine Bédard (Jean), Joseph (Patricia), and Maurice (Michelle Burrows); by his grandchildren Marcel Bédard (Brittany Byron), Caroline Bédard, Marc Joubert, Renelle Joubert (Justin Lam), Chris Burrows, Ashley Burrows (Jeff Schalla); by his great-grandchildren Théa Bédard, Léo Bédard, Sapphire Burrows, Jax Burrows, and by numerous nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife of 50 years Dorothée (née Courcelles); by his parents, Xavier and Éléonore (née Laroche), brothers and sisters-in-law: Augustin, Jean-Marie (Marguerite Dillaire), Joseph (Mélina Fontaine and Hélène Noels), Louis (Aurise Nault), Léon (Gertrude Tétrault), Michel, Xavier; sisters and brothers-in-law: Marguerite, Jeanne (Frank Vinet), and Léopold Girard.

Denis was born and raised on the family farm in St. Pierre-Jolys. Drafted into the army near the end of WW2 he went through basic training and then was assigned to a construction crew building hospitals for treatment of wounded soldiers. At the end of his military service he returned to help his parents and brothers operate the farm which over time entailed raising purebred Holstein dairy cattle, cropping, raising hogs, as well as raising foxes for the fur trade. Purebred Holstein dairy cattle were the nucleus of the farm, and Denis enjoyed training and exhibiting cattle at the summer fairs where the St. Pierre Holsteins banner and herd were proudly displayed. He and his brother Augustin purchased the farm and focused on the Holstein herd, sale of breeding stock, and cropping. He was a man who wanted to give back to the community. He was a director of the St. Pierre-Jolys agricultural society and, seeing a gap in the care required for livestock health, worked together with neighbouring municipalities to set up a veterinary clinic in St. Pierre-Jolys.

When he retired from the farm his passion shifted to seniors' quality of life within the community. He co-founded the Club Jolys seniors club in St. Pierre-Jolys, and served as president of the Eastman Senior Citizen Council. When not farming or contributing to the progression of his community, Denis could be

found enjoying a game of golf, playing cards, fishing, or canoeing.

Cremation has taken place and a Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated by Father Marcel Carrière in the St. Pierre-Jolys Catholic Church on Friday July 26, 2024 at 11:00 am. Interment to follow at the St. Pierre-Jolys Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Denis's memory to: DeSalaberry District Health Centre Foundation, Box 320, St.Pierre-Jolys MB R0A 1V0.

Il a été précédé dans la tombe par son épouse de 50 ans Dorothée (née Courcelles) ; ses parents, Xavier et Éléonore (née Laroche), ses frères et belles-sœurs : Augustin, Jean-Marie (Marguerite Dillaire), Joseph (Mélina Fontaine et Hélène Noels), Louis (Aurise Nault), Léon (Gertrude Tétrault), Michel, Xavier ; ses sœurs et beaux-frères : Marguerite, Jeanne (Frank Vinet) et Léopold Girard.

Denis est né et a grandi sur la ferme familiale à St. Pierre-Jolys. Appelé dans l’armée vers la fin de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, il a suivi une formation de base, puis a été affecté à une équipe de construction construisant des hôpitaux pour le traitement des soldats blessés. À la fin de son service militaire, il est retourné aider ses parents et ses frères à exploiter la ferme qui a vue au fil du temps l’élevage de vaches laitières Holstein de race pure, la grande culture, l’élevage de porcs, et l’élevage de renards pour la traite des fourrures. Les vaches laitières Holstein de race pure étaient le noyau de la ferme, et Denis aimait entraîner et exposer les meilleurs animaux aux foires d’été où la bannière St. Pierre Holsteins et le troupeau étaient fièrement exposés. Avec son frère Augustin ils achètent la ferme et se concentrent sur le troupeau Holstein, la vente d’animaux reproducteurs et la grande culture. C’était un homme qui voulait redonner à la communauté. Il a été directeur de la société agricole de St. Pierre-Jolys et, voyant une lacune dans les soins requis pour la santé du bétail, avait travaillé avec les municipalités avoisinantes afin d’établir une clinique vétérinaire à St. Pierre-Jolys.

Lorsqu’il a pris sa retraite de la ferme, sa passion s’est déplacée vers la qualité de vie des personnes âgées au sein de la communauté. Il a cofondé le club pour les aînés Club Jolys à St. Pierre-Jolys et a été président du Eastman Senior Citizen Council. Lorsqu’il n’était pas agriculteur ou qu’il ne contribuait pas à la progression de sa communauté, Denis aimait jouer au golf, jouer aux cartes, pêcher ou faire du canoë.

L’incinération a eu lieu et une messe de la Résurrection sera célébrée par le père Marcel Carrière en l’église catholique St. Pierre-Jolys le vendredi 26 juillet 2024 à 11h00. L’inhumation suivra au cimetière de St. Pierre-Jolys.
