Claudette was born in St. Boniface, Manitoba on April 7, 1943. After graduating from Glenlawn Collegiate, she met the love of her life Mervin at a nearby St. Vital bingo hall whom she married October 26, 1963. Claudette worked as a hairdresser with her mother, until caring for her four children became a full-time passion.
In addition to her devotion to being a great wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, she had many other passions such as fishing, cross-stitching, golfing, Winnipeg Jets, curling, card playing and the odd trip “up north” which we all knew was a casino. Mostly she loved to attend as many of the grandchildren’s sporting events as she could, to show her support.
The cottage at Pickerel Lake was a summer meeting place for family and grandchildren to gather and enjoy each other’s company. It was here she satisfied her endless love for fishing, always in pursuit of the elusive Pickerel Lake walleye, logging each one in a book to brag to others.
In winter months, it was off to Palm Springs with Mervin, where they enjoyed the warm climate, golf courses and casinos. To ease her time away from the grandchildren, photos of them were always brought along.
She loved the Winnipeg Jets, and attended or watched on TV all the games faithfully. The return of the Jets brought tears to her eyes, and kept a smile on her face right up until her passing.
Important also were the monthly meetings with the Hockey Moms and Macaulay Cresent neighbours.
The family would like to extend sincere thanks to all those who have provided comfort and support, and to the medical staff at St. Boniface Hospital for making her short stay comfortable. We were blessed to have Rev. Fr. Mark Gnutel join us to prepare her for the next journey in her life.
Pallbearers are Brayden Sul, Ethan Sul, Lucas Horn, Ashley Van Daele, Bryan Desautels, Robert Desautels. Honorary pallbearers are Gramma’s granddaughters, her little angels.
In lieu of flowers and in keeping with her love of the Jets, hockey and kids, donations may be made to the True North Youth Foundation in her memory or a charity of your choosing.
A funeral service was held February 4, 2017 11:00 a.m. at St. Anne Ukrainian Catholic Church, 35 Marcie St., Winnipeg, MB with Rev. Fr. Mark Gnutel as the officiating priest. A lunch reception was held at the church and interment followed at Green Acres Cemetery.
