Alfons was born in Davos, Switzerland on August 5, 1939. He came to Canada in 1959 as a young man looking for adventure at the age of 20.
Although Alf left his farm family and Café Weber, his family heritage was always a part of him. Alf’s three brothers all predeceased him but during his life were very much in his heart. His nephews Rene (who just visited in January) and Andy, are to left to mourn him.
Alf started on his grand adventure with his friend Hanz. They traveled Canada and the US, ending in Manitoba. He started out in Souris, MB as a simple farm hand with the Canning family, with whom he became lifelong friends. He was also active in the Swiss club where he met the Schneiders in Winnipeg and enjoyed dancing with girlfriend Yolande Allard, also gaining lifelong friends. Soon Alf became smitten with Yolande and became a hardworking husband.
Having a 40 year career at Co-op Implements, Portage Manufacturing Inc. and Vicon, making farm machinery. He started as a farm hand and ended his career as owner and Vice President of PMI.
Moving forward he and Yolande raised 2 terrific sons, always being supportive and involved in their lives. Alf and Yolande were also foster parents for 40+ years, sharing their love and support to others.
Alfons enjoyed many hours at the family cottage on Lake Winnipeg, having entertained and enlisted many in helping construct the cabin. Doing projects with his grandchildren at the lake were some of his best stories and memories.
Alf was always handy, fixing his antique guns and shooting with his sons.
He leaves his family: wife of 61 years, Yolande, sons Alfons and Kurt (Tracy), four grandchildren: Drew, Rachel, Nina, and Daniel.
Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 AM on Wednesday April 16 at Green Acres Funeral Home.
