With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Teresita "Tess" Españo David, a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. Teresita departed this life on September 28, 2024, in National City, California, after a brave battle with terminal cancer. She was 82 years old.
Teresita was born on August 20, 1942, in the small town of Gubat, Sorsogon, Philippines, which always held a special place in her heart. She was the cherished first child of Natividad Escandor Espano and Jose Lazaro Henson David's eight children. Her parents instilled in her the values of hard work, faith, love, and community service.
Teresita's education journey began at North Elementary School and continued through Gubat High School. She pursued her passion for caring for others by attending Centro Escolar University, where she graduated from the College of Nursing. Later, her thirst for knowledge led her to Loyola University, where she earned a Master’s in Theology.
She served faithfully at St. Matthew's Catholic Church in Virginia Beach, Virginia, every Sunday for many years, reflecting her deep devotion to her faith. Her servant's heart led her to pursue a career marked by her unwavering commitment to the well-being of and service to others. She worked at Chesapeake General Hospital, where her compassion and dedication touched countless lives. She also worked for United Way of South Hampton Roads and the Volunteer Connection in Norfolk, Virginia. Teresita was also a devoted volunteer with Operation Smile, bringing hope and joy to children and families in need. She was an active member of the Bicol Community. Her leadership shone brightly as the President of the Philippine-American Community of Tidewater, where she worked tirelessly to foster unity and support among those who shared her culture and association. Teresita also had a deep love for books and worked for the Chesapeake Public Libraries, bringing the joy of reading to many.
Beyond her professional and volunteer work, Teresita was a woman of many talents and interests. She was known for her exceptional cooking, which brought her family together around the table, creating cherished memories. Her creativity found an outlet in jewelry-making; her stylish flair was evident in every piece she crafted. Teresita was known for her skills and impeccable sense of style, which she carried gracefully throughout her life.
Enriched by the love and laughter of her whole family, Teresita is survived by her loving children, Michelle Serrano, Janice Serrano, Frances Serrano Tuminting (married to Ricardo), Phillip Serrano, and Theresa Serrano Hammond, who were her pride and joy. She also leaves behind her adored grandchildren, Kyle Bayquen, Sydney Hammond, and John Turner Hammond, who brought immense happiness to her days.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Lara Serrano, the identical twin of Frances, who passed less than two months after birth.
The family she leaves in the Philippines includes her siblings, Ma. Suzette David Antonio, Anita David Catamco, Edgardo Espano David, Alicia David Gozos, Nora David Escalate, Luz David Escanilla, and Necita "Pops" David Alon, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services to honor and celebrate Teresita's life will begin on Friday, October 18, 2024. Viewing will be available from 5:00 PM-9:00 PM at the Funeraria del Angel in National City, California, with the Celebration of Life/Rosary Vigil Service will begin at 7:00 PM. The Mass of Resurrection will be held on Saturday, October 19, 2024, at 10:00 AM at Mater Dei Catholic Church in Chula Vista, California. Friends and family are invited to come together to remember Teresita's vibrant spirit and the love she shared with all.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to Operation Smile (www.operationsmile.org), an organization close to Teresita's heart, to be made in her memory.
Teresita Españo David lived a life of love, kindness, and service. Her legacy will forever live on in the hearts of those she touched. She will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by all who had the privilege to know her.
