2/7/1946 – 7/5/2021
Rafael “Chick” Arellano was born on February 7, 1946 in Manila, Phillipines but grew up for most of his life in Guam. He passed away on July 5, 2021 with his beloved children surrounding him.
Chick grew up as the youngest of 4 children, hence his nickname came from “Chiquito”.
The family lived in Guam where his father, Cayetano was an accountant, and his mother, Pachuca, was a housewife. The close-knit family had so many friends, Uncles, and Aunties on the island.
After high school, Chick worked at Pan Am Airlines and Coca Cola, but shortly thereafter was drafted into the Army. He toured all over the world, including Japan, Germany, and was on the frontlines in Vietnam.
He was a decorated Sergeant First Class with 3 Ribbons for a Non Commissioned Officer Professional Development, Army Commendation Medal (First Oak Leaf Cluster), Army Good Conduct Medal (Sixth Award), Meritorious Service Medal, Army Achievement Medal (First Oak Leaf Cluster), Sharpshooter Badge with Rifle Component Bar, 3 Overseas Service Ribbons, National Defense Service and Medal/Army Service Ribbons.
He met and married his ex-wife Vaune while in the army, where they were eventually stationed in Ft. Hood Texas, and grew their family: with eldest Marjorie Irene (from Buffalo, NY), Raymond Christopher (Santee, CA), and Daniel Clayton (Dallas, TX). He adored his children and family. And did everything for them.
After retiring from the Army, he moved to California to start a new career at American Airlines.
He lived in National City, San Diego for over 20 years and was a devout Catholic, a parishioner at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in National City. He regularly volunteered for the parish, until he moved in with his son Raymond in Santee. His Catholic faith was paramount in his life, he was known to wake up in the middle of the night for his prayers for every single person in the family. Generous to the core, he was the best tipper and brought goodies for all. He was especially kind to his sisters. Terry in the 80’s while she was going through Cancer treatment. Choly, who he took care of during her later years, and visited her everyday,.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Cayetano and Pachuca. His sisters, Terry and Choly, and brother Tony.
He is survived by his daughter, Marjorie, sons Raymond and Daniel, daughter in law Amy, many Nieces and Nephews and Grand Nieces and Grand Nephews. And his beloved, BoBoy or Iceberg the Husky.
He will be sorely missed, but we know he is dancing the jig with all of his family and friends in heaven who have been waiting for his arrival. We love you Chick, party on!
Si Yu’us Ma’ase!
