He was educated at Nash County Schools until moving to Newark, NJ where he continued his education as a teenager attending Weekway Highschool.
He met and married the love of his life, Barbara (Adkins) Joyner in East Orange in the summer of 1963. Through this union, four sons were born: Joseph (Jody), Steven (Troy), Lawrence (Larry), and Rodney (Rod).
Joseph was employed by General Motors. He received a transfer, so Joseph and Barbara moved their family to South Jersey Burlington Co. He was very active and involved in the raising of their sons including annual two week vacations at the Jersey Coast. He retired from GM in 1997 after 30+ years of service.
Joseph and Barbara moved to San Diego, CA to embark on their West Coast adventure that involved fishing with his grandkids and just relaxing on the beach with BBQ, smooth jazz on the radio.
Joseph is survived by his brother Robert of Camden, NJ, wife Barbara, sons Joseph (Susan), Steve (Raquel), Lawrence and Rodney (Dorie) and twelve grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.
Preceded in death by parents Joseph and Cleo, older sister Louise Walker, younger sisters Joyce Ann Lucas and Derby Lucas, and younger brother Elmo Lee Lucas.
